Mastering Paraphrase in Reading and Listening Exams
246 词 · 难度 3/5 · 类型 language_learning
One of the most useful exam skills is recognizing paraphrase. In reading and listening tests, correct answers rarely repeat the exact words from the passage or recording. Instead, they express the same meaning with different vocabulary, grammar, or sentence order. If you only look for matching words, you may choose a distractor. If you focus on meaning, you can identify the equivalent idea.
Paraphrase often works in three ways. First, synonyms replace key words: a passage may say 'the scheme was expensive,' while a question says 'the project cost a lot.' Second, word forms change: 'decide' may appear as 'decision,' or 'pollute' as 'pollution.' Third, sentence structure changes: 'Researchers found that the method improved results' may become 'The method was found to improve results.'
To practise, underline key ideas in questions and predict possible synonyms before you read or listen. During the exam, compare the whole meaning of each option with the text, not just one shared word. Ask yourself: 'Does this option express the same idea in a different way?' Also watch for negative forms and scope words such as all, some, often, and rarely, because they can change meaning. For example, 'Some students benefit' is not equivalent to 'All students benefit.' A useful strategy is to keep a paraphrase notebook: record original phrases and rewrite them in two different ways. This builds flexibility and speed. Remember: exams test understanding, not word matching. Strong paraphrase skills help you avoid traps and answer with greater confidence.
